Daughters of the American Revolution continue their support of North County Serenity House.

NCSH would like to acknowledge the Rincon del Diablo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for their continued support, year-round!

This organization helps us out by providing personal hygiene bags for all new women and children. Items typically include such things as a toothbrush and toothpaste, brush, comb, shampoo, lotion, etc.

In addition to making special bags for the children with child-size items, DAR provides new baby gifts to moms which include a new quilt, baby shampoo and lotion, and maybe a rattle too!

NCSH Prom: Unexpected Donation Leads to an Evening of Sober Fun for CENTER Residents!

The excitement of Prom night is something that many women in residential substance abuse treatment know little about. Demographic data indicates that most women in residential substance abuse treatment began their addiction at an average age of 14. For many of these women, attending the traditional high school dance was overshadowed by the troubles of an addiction that saw up to 25% of them drop out before Prom night.

It is not often in life that one is able to make up for lost time, but the women of North County Serenity House Center were able to do just that on January 28th, 2011, by throwing their own Prom, complete with a theme, decorations, photo booth, live music, food, and plenty of glamor.

The idea for the dance came from the unlikely donation of over 200 formal prom dresses from a Hollywood production company who was looking to donate dresses used in a movie scene. The residents spent over three weeks sorting out the dresses and making sure that each resident had the perfect dress for the occasion. The residents also formed Prom Committees who were responsible for decorations, menu planning, entertainment, and flowers.

NCSH Center Site Administrator Tray Thomason, whose band provided live music for the event, noted that “it was heartwarming to see our residents get so excited about the evening, and having a chance to experience something they may have missed.” The evening began with each resident visiting the photo booth after having her hair and make up done in the newly renovated “Serenity Evolution Salon”, a full service salon that the facility uses for guest and resident beauticians. The women then enjoyed a buffet dinner, complimented with punch, cookies, and other treats.

Dinner was followed by dancing and entertainment from a live band. The women of the house spent hours decorating the large group meeting room complete with streamers, balloons, and the requisite mirrored ball. An elegant color scheme of pale pink and black was chosen to accent the evening.

Soon it was time to crown the Prom Queen and her Court, which included the Prom Princess and Prom Duchess. Nominees for Prom Court were chosen by the house at their weekly meeting and voting was completed during the pre-party festivities. After the announcements were made, the party resumed with more dancing and fun, which even had the staff on their feet, “shaking their groove thang..”

All the women of NCSH Center worked hard to plan, prepare for, and enjoy this event. The staff and residents of NCSH Center hope to make events like this a regular occurrence, with or without an unusual donation of party dresses!
